Introduction

MADRASAH ISLAHIYAH, Kampung Kastam, Kuala Lumpur is the place where the Koperasi Kastam Malaysia Berhad or Kopkastam was born in 1979. In the courtyard of the madarasah, a picture was also displayed advertising “What is a Cooperative” to the Customs. At the beginning of that moment, Customs residents have begun to appreciate the cooperative movement and hope to help improve the economic status of the family for a future full of challenges and should be handled with confidence. reaching the age of 30 years the Customs Cooperative has been able to show a commendable financial performance despite at a time when the country’s economy was in turmoil.

Kopkastam has succeeded in upgrading the socio-economic status of its members. The loan facilities provided have succeeded in reducing the financial burden of its members as well as encouraging savings and thrift practices. All the welfare of members and families is given priority. As such, it is hard to imagine an initial move based solely on accumulated capital through monthly capital fees, the Customs Cooperative has succeeded to this point.
